Smuggling and Prohibited Goods in Algeria: An Unannounced War and Prospects for Change

For decades, Algeria has faced crucial challenges on various fronts, including political, economic, and social spheres. Despite the diversity of these challenges, the most dangerous remains this "unannounced war" waged against the Algerian state, taking various forms but ultimately converging on one objective: undermining the stability of the state and compromising its internal security, thereby destroying the foundations of its development that its people strive to build. Among these crises, the phenomenon of smuggling stands out as one of the most prominent features of this hidden war, where Algeria’s borders are invaded by massive smuggling operations, turning these borders into illegal crossings that threaten all segments of Algerian society.

In recent years, Algeria, due to its geographical location, has become a focal point for smuggling in North Africa. Smugglers, supported by international networks, exploit the security gaps in the vast desert borders to smuggle prohibited goods such as weapons, drugs, and subsidized goods that flood the markets and harm the national economy. These activities are not merely for financial gain; they aim to destabilize the country by feeding the black market and fostering an environment that threatens internal security, further strengthening organized crime activities.

What makes this phenomenon even more dangerous is that it is not just simple smuggling, but a methodical strategy aimed at dismantling the social fabric of Algeria and destroying the moral values upon which society is based. The psychological impact of these activities reaches every individual, instilling a sense of helplessness and pushing citizens to lose confidence in national institutions. This feeling deepens over time, strengthening the belief that there are hidden forces working against the country’s interests and security, leading to an increase in crimes, drugs, and the destruction of an entire generation of Algerian youth.

In light of this situation, responding to this deviant group that threatens national security requires firm and resolute measures. There can be no leniency or complacency in addressing this threat because smuggling is not merely an economic crime but a direct threat to national security with serious political and social consequences. Therefore, the response to this threat must be strong and unwavering. Algeria needs new security strategies, along with strengthening the capacity of its institutions to combat these gangs by developing modern mechanisms to fight smuggling more effectively. Traditional solutions are no longer sufficient, and a radical change in the penalties for these activities is now unavoidable.

In this context, I believe it is necessary to amend the penal laws to include harsher penalties, with the death penalty being applied in cases that directly threaten national security. Suspended sentences are no longer effective in such cases because the threat posed by smuggling networks requires that the law be stricter and more effective. Harsh penalties will not only help deter criminals, but also send a strong message to anyone who might attempt to harm Algeria’s security, indicating that the state will not tolerate violations of the law and will protect its supreme interests.

Alongside tightening punitive measures, it is essential to improve the capabilities of security forces and enhance surveillance at all border crossings. The Algerian borders, with their vast desert areas, represent a major security challenge that requires concerted efforts to combat smuggling operations more effectively. Moreover, regional and international cooperation in this area will play a significant role in reducing the impact of these cross-border networks, especially since smuggling knows no boundaries.

In conclusion, it must be emphasized that Algeria, with its strategic location and rich cultural and civilizational heritage, deserves to be surrounded by all the factors necessary for security and stability. Smuggling and prohibited goods pose a significant threat to this goal, which is why it is crucial to confront this phenomenon through a strict legal approach, including radical changes in legislation and security policies. Therefore, every Algerian must be fully aware of the severity of these threats and stand firmly alongside the country’s institutions in their ongoing battle against this imminent danger that threatens their security and future.
